  The intended purpose for this meeting is for ASLITAQ to collaborate with regional interpreters to better understand how we can work together to improve the advocacy for regional Queensland and training needs of interpreters and translators in regional Queensland.

  If you are working as an interpreter or translator, studying to become an interpreter or translator or somewhere in between, then this town hall is for you.

  ASLITAQ 2025 P-Platers November

  $0.00

  New Year, New P-Platers! Look who’s back, back again, for another year of ethical dilemmas, interpreting challenges and social chats, and this year, there’s the fantastic Emily, Pauline and Sab joining the team. This month the focus will be on those tricky ethical issues we face.

  P-Platers is a social group for early career interpreters and soon-to-be NAATI certified provisional interpreters. This is a group for ASLITA members (including associate members) from any ASLITA state Association who:

  • have completed their Diploma of Interpreting but are not yet certified, or
  • are Certified Provisional Interpreters – CPI and CPDI

  P-Platers is about peer social support, shared learning and professional networking opportunities such as:

  • Share tips and tricks
  • Discuss ethical quandaries
  • Learn and benefit from other people’s experiences
  • Ask those questions in a safe space
  • Meet new people and build your professional networks
  • Practice your skills
  • Earn NAATI points

  Cost: FREE

  Sessions will be held on Zoom 630pm – 730pm QLD time.

  ASLITAQ – 2025 Safe Space – What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters

  $80.00 (member price: $40.00)
  To acknowledge the importance of mental health, ASLITA will be providing two PDs throughout the Mental Health Awareness week (4th – 11^th October) that are specifically tailored towards the aspects of interpreters and translators’ perspectives, experiences and responsibilities that can differ. Both of these workshops will establish a safe and confidential space for participants so that our presenters can pass on their knowledge to help interpreters look after themselves.

  ‘Safe Space – What does this look like for Deaf Interpreters?’ is open to Deaf Interpreters and Deaf RPTs only. For this PD, we are fortunate to invite two wonderfully experienced Deaf professionals who have worked within the mental health sector for many years. Irene Holub is based in Australia and has a wealth of knowledge as a Deaf Counsellor and founder of AuslanSoul. We also have Herbert Klein who will be joining us from the U.K. in order to provide his expertise and advice on navigating through the mental health space within the NHS (National Health Service) in England. Both presenters will be discussing the following topics below and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions.

  The informal discussion between Irene, Herbert and the ASLITA facilitator will be delving deeper into the topics below:

  • What does mental health mean to you?
  • The importance of understanding the client’s background and clinical history.
  • How to establish good boundaries and confidentiality?
  • How to deal with aggression?
  • How to cope in triggering jobs?
  • Who can I talk to for support and guidance?
  • Strategies on self-care and self- reflection.
  • How to protect yourself from vicarious trauma?

  This PD will not be recorded and no Auslan interpreters will be provided. This PD will be delivered in Auslan/BSL.
